Performance Marketing in India: ROAS, Budgets and What Actually Works

Performance marketing is advertising where every rupee is tracked to a result: a sale, a lead, an install. Done well it is the most accountable growth channel a brand can run. Done badly it burns budget faster than anything else. This guide covers the metrics that matter, how to structure campaigns, and the benchmarks Indian brands should expect.

    ROAS

    Core metric

    Meta + Google

    Main channels

    Rs 50K+

    Testing budget

    2-4 weeks

    Learning period

    The metrics that actually matter

ROAS, return on ad spend, is revenue divided by ad spend. A 3x ROAS means every rupee spent returned three in revenue. CAC, customer acquisition cost, is what you pay to win one customer. Together they tell you whether growth is profitable or just expensive.

Ignore vanity metrics. Impressions, reach and even clicks mean nothing if the economics do not close. A campaign with a high click-through rate and a terrible ROAS is a failure wearing a nice outfit.

Meta Ads vs Google Ads for Indian brands

Meta, meaning Facebook and Instagram, creates demand: it shows your product to people who were not searching for it, which suits impulse and lifestyle products. Google captures demand: it reaches people already searching for what you sell, which suits considered purchases and high-intent queries.

Most Indian D2C brands start on Meta because creative-led products scale faster there, then add Google Search and Shopping once search volume for their category and brand exists.

    How to structure campaigns

    • Prospecting campaigns to reach new audiences with broad or interest targeting
    • Retargeting campaigns for site visitors and cart abandoners
    • Creative testing campaigns that rotate 3 to 5 ad concepts continuously
    • One clear conversion objective per campaign, never mixed goals
    • Weekly review of spend, ROAS and cost per result with decisions, not just reports

    Creative is the new targeting

As platforms automate audience targeting, the ad itself does the filtering. The brands winning on Meta in 2026 are the ones shipping new creative every week: UGC style videos, founder stories, problem-solution hooks and offer-led statics. Budget follows creative performance, not the other way around.

    Realistic benchmarks for India

Healthy Indian D2C brands typically see blended ROAS between 2x and 4x depending on category and price point, with marketplace-heavy brands measuring differently. Cost per purchase varies enormously by category, so benchmark against your own history month over month rather than generic industry numbers.

Expect the first two to four weeks to be a learning period where results are noisy. Judging a campaign in its first week is how good strategies get killed early.

    When to hire an agency

Below roughly Rs 50,000 a month in spend, a founder can learn the basics themselves. Beyond that, the cost of mistakes usually exceeds an agency fee. A good performance agency brings creative production, media buying discipline and honest reporting; a bad one brings dashboards full of vanity metrics. Ask any agency you evaluate to show blended ROAS and CAC, not impressions.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is performance marketing?+

Advertising where you pay for and measure specific results like sales or leads, primarily through Meta Ads, Google Ads and marketplace advertising.

What is a good ROAS in India?+

Most D2C brands target 2x to 4x blended ROAS depending on margins. What matters is whether the ROAS covers your product cost, shipping, and ad spend with profit left over.

How much budget do I need to start?+

Plan at least Rs 50,000 per month to give campaigns enough data to optimize. Smaller budgets work for learning but rarely for scale.

    Meta or Google Ads first?+

Impulse and lifestyle products usually start on Meta; high-intent searched products start on Google. Most brands end up running both.

How long before ads become profitable?+

Expect two to four weeks of learning, then steady improvement as creative and audiences are refined. Brands that quit in week two rarely give the system time to work.
