Amazon FBA India: Costs, Setup and When It Is Worth It

FBA buys you Prime delivery speed, better buy box performance and hands off logistics, in exchange for fees and inventory discipline. This guide covers what it costs, how to set it up and when self ship is the smarter call.

    How FBA works in India

You send inventory into Amazon fulfilment centres. Amazon stores it, picks, packs, ships and handles returns and most customer service. Your listings carry the Prime badge, which lifts conversion meaningfully in competitive categories.

Stock is state mapped for GST, so your registrations need to cover the states where your inventory sits. Getting this wrong is the most common launch delay.

    What FBA actually costs

    • Referral fee charged as a category percentage of the sale price
    • Fulfilment fees for pick, pack and weight handling
    • Storage fees charged by volume, rising for long stored stock
    • Removal or disposal fees for stock you pull back
    • Returns handling costs, which vary sharply by category

    Packaging and labelling requirements

Every unit needs a scannable barcode, correct legal metrology declarations and packaging that survives a fulfilment centre. Shipments must follow box, weight and labelling rules or they get rejected at receiving.

Fragile and liquid products need sealed, leak proof packing. The cost of getting this right is always lower than the cost of damage returns.

    Inventory planning

Send cover for a defined number of weeks based on real sell-through rather than hope. Overstock quietly accumulates storage fees, while stockouts reset your rank and momentum.

Replenish on a fixed cadence and keep a small self ship buffer for your fastest SKU so a delayed inbound shipment never takes the listing offline.

When self ship is the better choice

    • Large, heavy or low value items where fulfilment fees erase the margin
    • Slow moving long tail SKUs that would sit and accrue storage costs
    • Short shelf life products that risk expiry inside the network
    • Highly variable seasonal ranges with unpredictable demand
    • Early testing, before you know which SKUs actually move

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need GST registration in every state for FBA?+

You need registration covering the states where your inventory is stored, which is why fulfilment centre selection matters at setup.

Is FBA cheaper than self ship?+

For fast moving, compact, reasonably priced products usually yes. For heavy, slow or low margin items it often is not.

How much inventory should I send first?+

Enough cover for a few weeks of realistic sales, then replenish on a fixed cadence once you have real sell-through data.

    Does FBA improve rankings?+

It improves delivery speed and conversion, which influence performance. It is not a direct ranking switch on its own.
